English in Class 1

Read Write Inc + Cornerstones

We use the Read Write Inc (RWI)  and the Letters and Sounds schemes to get children off to a flying start with their reading, writing and spelling. RWI is a method of learning centred around letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing. Children begin learning letter sounds within the first few weeks of starting in Reception and will learn 3/4 new sounds a week.  We also follow the Cornerstones Curriculum on which our topics are based.

Support for Parents

You can find more information about the scheme on the site www.ruthmiskin.com/en/parents which you can access by clicking the link below.

Here you will find video tutorials on how to pronounce letter sounds, Fred talk and blend to read.

In Year One the pupils will take the National Phonics Screening check. This is an assessment to gauge a child's reading ability.

Each pupil is asked to read a mixture of real and made-up words which the teacher will assess. More information can be found by clicking the link below.
